Superior
Foundation/History:
Reportedly named after the "superior" quality of coal found in the area, the Town of Superior's history is steeped in coal mining. The first mines in the area were developed in the late 1800s. The Town itself was founded in 1896 and incorporated in 1904. Mining was the major force in Superior's history until the Industrial Mine closed in 1945. Subsequently, many people moved out of the area and the Town evolved into a quiet ranching and farming community. The population hovered around just 250 people until the 1990s, when the Town's largest residential development, Rock Creek Ranch, was approved. Development continues with approximately 2,700 single-family homes and 1,800 multi-family homes being developed in Rock Creek, making Superior’s population swell to approximately 12,000.
Demographics/Amenities:
Superior offers residents numerous parks and recreation activities with our parks, trails, open space, ballfields and community pools throughout town. The Town is approximately four square miles in area has 594 acres of parks, greenspace, and open space and 27 miles of trails. With 600,000-square-feet of retail space viewed by more than 120,000 vehicles each day, The Superior Marketplace is the most convenient place to shop. The Center is anchored by Costco, Super Target, Sports Authority, Michael's, Office Max, PetSmart, Ross, TJ Maxx and Wild Oats.
Location:
Superior is located adjacent to the City of Boulder along the U.S. 36 highway corridor and The Superior Marketplace is immediately adjacent to the U.S. 36 highway.
