Boulder

Foundation/History:

Gold seekers established the first non-native settlement in Boulder County on October 17, 1858 at Red Rocks near the entrance to Boulder Canyon. Less than a year later, on February 10, 1859, the Boulder City Town Company was organized by A.A. Brookfield, the first president, and 56 shareholders. City government was formalized on Saturday, November 4, 1871 when the town of Boulder was incorporated. By 1880 Boulder's population had passed the 3,000 mark, which was the minimum required by state statutes for the incorporation of a city of the second class.



Demographics/Amenities:

Boulder has a population of about 100,000 people, of which 29,000 are students at the University of Colorado- Boulder, and is known for its natural beauty, outdoor recreation, natural product retailers and restaurants, outstanding alternative transportation options, diverse businesses, and technological and academic resources. Boulder is home to approximately 43,000 acres of open space lands and about 300 miles of bike and pedestrian trails and paths and bike lanes and routes.



Location:

Boulder is located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, just 35 miles northwest of Denver. Home of the University of Colorado's main campus and the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder sits 5,430 feet above sea level and is surrounded by a greenbelt of city trails and open spaces.
